Portland Public Schools is promoting two plans to close Marysville as part of proposed changes that will affect 1 in 4 PPS students.
This process and the reasons for Marysville's selection has been unclear. By PPS's own metrics, Marysville meets the goal of using school space efficiently. It is currently at 83% of the school size goal, and our overall student population is projected to increase by another 6% in the next three years.
PPS is trying to fix a school that isn't broken.
Marysville is a school where 90% of the students are within one mile. It is a Title 1 school, where every child is provided breakfast and lunch, in addition to social services that support families and neighbors. It is a school where students of minoritized backgrounds are the majority.
Is this the kind of school that PPS really needs to close?
Families, teachers, students, and neighbors say: No Marysville, No Deal!
